Great piece. There were lots of ‘garter’ snakes around when I was a child, I thought they were fascinating.

Thanks, Susan! It’s interesting—they’re usually black, but the color of the their stripes vary. They don’t usually pay any attention to us at all, even when we’re very near.

My brothers, unfortunately, used to catch them and put them in a snake box they built. I felt sorry for them.

Lots of kids do. I wish humans were kinder.

Lovely Wendy….

Just kidding…snakes I stay away from. It is so nice to find you here! Even your drawing kept me moving and thank you for the warning.

Are you sure you don’t work for a travel magazine or National Geographic? Do hope you are well and love your photos and art💜☮️

It has taken me (more than a minute), but I have an appreciation for snakes now. Like when they rattle and don't strike on the while hiking, (which has happened a million bajillion times) I thank them. When a California King snake takes center stage and slithers across the trail in front of me - I tell them how gorgeous he is! I'm that weirdo. Also, I envision Mary standing on the snake in a reclaiming of owning her divine feminine power. But I'm no ordinary Catholic. mwah

I’m that weirdo, too! And I think rattlesnakes are very polite! A warning is much appreciated. And I don’t think you’re an ordinary anything. : ) x

Have always liked and appreciated snakes. I will always stop to watch one, big or small, dangerous or not, if only I could sketch one like you can! You nailed it (figuratively speaking). Oh, zoos are fascinating and sad to me. But mostly sad.

Snakes are so beautiful. I’m in awe. And thank you—I do love that drawing. Zoos…I used to love them for the same reason most people love them—it’s a thrill to see the animals up close. But at what price? When I started seeing it from their perspective, all I saw was neurosis and lethargy. We are not doing right by them.

I learned that snakes have evolved placentation/live birth over 100 separate times in different lineages. It really helped me with editing the creation story I had been given as a child, including the character of the snake, into something much more expansive. I adore your drawing!

Wendy's avatar

Thank you! I’m really happy with the drawing, too. I think that’s why I’ve left it unfinished…it seems good just the way it is. And that’s fascinating about evolution/live birth and how that’s affected the creation story. Have you written about that? I’d love to hear more…

"Scales and skin, touching"--I love how you come full circle at the end, to embracing our powerful, peaceful scary friends.

Great post, Wendy!

What an interesting collection of tales!

My son and his friends are herpers-- like birders, but for snakes and turtles and the occasional salamander. They keep lists and detailed maps of hunting grounds and seasons. I am thrilled to be included and have witnessed some incredible animals. My phone is loaded with pictures many people do NOT want to see, so I totally get your warning at the start of this post.

Did you know that a snake and crane battling is the genesis of tai chi? The snake, interestingly enough is Yin--the "soft" side of the Yin/Yang.

Wendy's avatar

I did not know that! That’s fascinating. We’ve learned so much from watching animals. They may be soft, but they are so strong… (maybe like us!)

Not fond of venomous snakes. I have nightmares. I appreciate the garter in our yard, she /he really keeps the pests away! I'm very thankful to live back in western Washington with non venomous snakes. We lived in Texas for 5 years with some really frightening snakes. Our kids had lessons in school on how to avoid them.

Wendy's avatar

I understand that! They scare me, too! Only garter snakes where I am, so I don’t have to be so wary. Texas would scare tf out of me. For lots of reasons, maybe snakes least of all…

I love reading your experiences with snakes Wendy, and how you face each one so fearlessly. Your drawing is amazing, so detailed! I have to say, even though I know the spiritually behind snakes, dang it, if they don't still scare the bejesus out of me every single time. I have several snake experiences too, and of course nothing bad happened, but there's still something I'm apparently need to work through with them. Maybe I'll try think of them as cute little dragons now. 😉

Wendy's avatar

They scare me, too! So much! But I’m also drawn to them. It’s confusing. 😂 And I like thinking of them as little dragons.

Oh, I love all the details of the scales. I love snakes. This is really well done.

Thank you so much, Leslie! Yeah, I get a little catch in my heart when I look at it.
